Ceremony at Capital Airlines- HNA Real Estate Championship Honors Top-Five

DONGGUAN, China (December 6)—Bryden Macpherson, winner of two 2015 Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series’ tournaments, captured the season-long Order of Merit title and leads a group of players who finished inside the top five on the money list and earned 2016 Web.com Tour membership. By virtue of his place on the Order of Merit, Macpherson will be fully exempt for the entire 2016 season. The other players moving to the Web.com Tour are New Zealand’s Josh Geary, China’s Xinjun Zhang and Zecheng Dou and Canada’s Eugene Wong. The players received their membership cards during a ceremony following the final event of the season, the Capital Airlines – HNA Real Estate Championship.

Macpherson, a Series member in 2014 who finished eighth on the Order of Merit, played on the Web.com Tour in 2015, earning membership through the Tour’s Qualifying Tournament. When Macpherson’s Web.com Tour season ended in August, he returned to China and almost immediately made his presence known. After a tie for 13th at his first tournament, the Ping An Bank Open, Macpherson won the Cadillac Championship, also in Beijing. He won again at the Lushan Open and reeled off six consecutive top-fives. He passed Geary on the Order of Merit with a tie for third at the Hainan Open and finished 22,730 ahead of second-place Geary, pocketing 769,960.

“It feels awesome. In hindsight, it was hard to get myself amped up for this week knowing I had already achieved what I wanted to achieve from mid-August. I came over here to try to skip through the first stage (of the Qualifying Tournament), and I’ve managed to skip Q School altogether where I’ll have all year on the Tour next year,” Macpherson said. “I don’t think I can quite be ecstatic about it yet because I can’t really believe I’ve done it.”

“What a success story Bryden was this season, coming over and re-establishing himself on this Tour and showing what a great player he is,” said PGA TOUR China Series’ Executive Director Greg Carlson. “But beyond what Bryden did, we also have four other talented players who have gained great experience on this Tour. It will be enjoyable watching them take their talents and the experience they gained here to the Web.com Tour.”

The 2016 Web.com Tour season, the 26th in its history, begins in late-January at the Panama Claro Championship in Panama City, Panama (January 29-February 1).

Beginning in 2013, the Web.com Tour became The Path to the PGA TOUR by awarding all 50 cards to Web.com Tour players for the following PGA TOUR season. Players can initially qualify for the Web.com Tour through the National Qualifying Tournament and by securing top-five Order of Merit finishes on the Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series, PGA TOUR Latinoamerica and the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada. Through the 2014-15 season, former Web.com Tour players have won 424 PGA TOUR titles. Three out of four 2014-15 PGA TOUR members have Web.com Tour roots. PGA TOUR China sent its first five players to the Web.com Tour following the 2014 season. They were China’s Haotong Li and Xinjun Zhang, Australia’s Brett Drewitt, the U.S.’s Sam Chien and South Korea’s Todd Baek, with Zhang electing to stay in China and not play the Web.com Tour. Li and Baek both finished high enough on the 2015 Web.com Tour money list to retain their playing privileges for 2016.

In 2014, PGA TOUR China, a joint effort between the PGA TOUR and the China Golf Association, had nine different winners who came from five countries (China, Australia, South Korea, Thailand and the United States). China Olympic Sports Industry ran the day-to-day operation of PGA TOUR China with assistance from the PGA TOUR.

Bryden Macpherson this Season

Bryden Macpherson didn’t play a full season on the Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series, but the tournaments he did play were more than enough. In his eight starts after completing his Web.com Tour season, the Australian won twice—at the Cadillac Championship and the Lushan Open—and had six consecutive top-five finishes to set a PGA TOUR China Series record. He finished atop the Order of Merit, outdistancing Josh Geary by 22,730.

Josh Geary this Season

New Zealand’s Josh Geary skipped the final two events of the season but still finished second on the Order of Merit, relinquishing the No. 1 spot late to Bryden Machpherson. Still, Geary had an outstanding year, joining Haotong Li as the only three-time winner in Series’ history. Geary won the season-opening Buick Open, he added a win at the Lanhai Open and then closed with his final title of the year at the Yulongwan Yunnan Open.

Xinjun Zhang this Season

For the second year in a row, China’s Xinjun Zhang won a Series tournament title—taking the Chongqing Jiangnan NewTown KingRun Open, shooting a pair of 65s on the weekend. Zhang showed his consistency by making a late charge at The Eternal Courtyard Open to finish second, and he also tied for fifth at the Hainan Open.

Zecheng Dou this Season

A late-season charge by Zecheng Dou that included a playoff loss at the Nine Dragons Open, a tie for third at the Hainan Open and a third-place showing at the season-ending Capital Airlines – HNA Real Estate Championship took him from No. 6 on the Order of Merit when the final week of the season began into the top five, at No. 4. Dou also had four other top-10s during the season, including a tie for fourth at the season-opening Buick Open.

Eugene Wong this Season

Eugene Wong had a close call early in the season, finishing second at the United Investment Real Estate Wuhan Open. After a tie for fifth in his next start, he had to wait a month before he finally won—putting middle rounds of 67-63 together on Friday and Saturday to win the Ping An Bank Open in Beijing.
